Twitter is Reportedly Testing a New Homepage Design

Twitter Begins Testing its New Homepage Design to Entice Visitors to Sign Up, Says Report

Think Twitter’s homepage design is boring? Well, the social media network may soon sport a new and improved homepage design in an effort to increase the number of individuals who don’t just visit the site, but sign up for the service as well.

In early January, Ad Age reported that a new homepage for logged-out visitors was in the works. The new design would apparently include “a series of tiles featuring Twitter content, both images and text, clustered by subject matter, like entertainment and sports.” Interestingly, Re/code reported the same test a month after Ad Age’s report surfaced.

Twitter previously displayed a photo from one of its 288 million monthly active users on its main homepage. The new version being tested boasts a creative layout of topics and tweets from popular accounts, giving visitors a glimpse of what they could see once they sign up for an account. [See Figure 1]

Re/code reported:

That version, which you can see at the top of this post, includes multiple streams of tweets from different categories like “General news sources” and “TV shows and stars.” These tweets appear to be curated from popular accounts on the service. A Twitter rep confirmed the company is testing the new homepage.

Twitter hopes that this update, once officially rolled out, could make some of the 500 million people who visit the site monthly and don’t log in, sign up.

In the coming months, the new homepage might also be a platform for advertisers to showcase their products and services, as the update was originally reported to be part of Twitter’s monetization strategy.
