Tweets Now Shareable on Direct Messages
Have you always wanted to share a tweet privately and felt frustrated because that feature wasnt available? Fortunately, Twitter has listened to feedback from its users.
Hard on the heels from making its entire index searchable, in a blog post dated November 20, 2014, the company elaborated on further functions that were coming to the Direct Messaging feature, something that they have been hinting at for months now. Public tweets can now be shared in Direct Message conversations privately and instantly.
As stated in the blog post:
Twitter is already a great place for public conversation; now its also easier to privately discuss things you care about.

As Figure 1 above shows, iOS and Android users can scroll through their timeline, and should they come across a tweet they want to share privately with a contact, they can long press on the tweet and “Share via Direct Message. Additionally, they may attach a message to the tweet. The person you share a Tweet with will get a push notification, and the Tweet will display directly in the conversation, states the official announcement.
On twitter.com and TweetDeck, users can tap the More icon, which will lead them to the “Share via Direct Message selection. Meanwhile, on the desktop version of Twitter, the feature can be found in the drop down menu that each tweet has. [See Figure 2 below]

Although not quite a feature that Twitter users have been clamoring for, making it easier to share content from their timeline would be helpful. As seen previously in Figure 1, the transition from public to private feed is seamless, making it a welcome addition to some of the other features that have been introduced to Direct Messaging, such as easier photo sharing. Recently, the sharing of links was problematic in these conversations, but Twitter has since fixed the issue.
More importantly, the new feature seems to be in line with Twitters recent announcement that a few major changes were coming to its platform and algorithm. As previously reported, the company mentioned that Direct Messaging was set to undergo several updates, and if sharing public tweets is the first of these several updates, there certainly is more to look forward to.
The feature is now available on the Twitter iOS and Android app, as well as TweetDeck for web, Chrome, and Windows.
