Samsung Continues to Dominate Android Web Traffic; LG Gaining Ground

A new study from Chitika on Android web traffic demonstrates Samsung’s continued dominance in the market. As Samsung’s market share back in June 2014 was 56.4%, the company experienced a 1 percent share increase in the third quarter. Chitika determined that this was likely due to the numerous discounts and bundles being offered by Samsung on their new Galaxy S5 model, which was released in April 2014.

Despite the dominance of Samsung, as seen in Figure 1, it should be noted that LG posted the biggest share increase since the last Chitika report. It had already overtaken Amazon as the number two driver of Android web traffic in the second quarter of 2014—and experiencing a nearly 2% share increase shows that it may just continue to grow.

Chitika attributes this to the success of the LG G3, which crossed 10 million units sold back in August. Meanwhile, all other Android brands listed have either experienced losses in their market share, minor increases, or no change at all. comScore also reports that LG gained just a little more new subscribers compared to Apple in the third quarter. As a result, according to the Chitika study, LG “now generates more than 10% of total North American Android smartphone and tablet Web traffic.”

Web traffic for Android also continues to be dominated by smartphones over tablets. The current 81%-19% spread seen in Figure 2 shows that smartphones have increased their presence by two percent from the previous quarter. The report observed that Android has a “small pool” of tablet releases which could have been a big factor, as they “simply haven’t caught on with North American consumers quite as well as the newest crop of Android smartphones.” Still, Chitika seemed hopeful that with Amazon’s newest versions of the Kindle and Samsung’s new nine-inch Nexus tablet coming in time for the holidays, there could be an increase just before the year ends.

Chitika’s data for their survey was derived from “hundreds of millions of U.S. and Canadian smartphone- and tablet-based online ad impressions” for the whole month of September.
