LinkedIn Showcases New Homepage Design

LinkedIn’s Redesigned Homepage: A New Dashboard, Keep in Touch Box, and Improved LinkedIn Pulse

Back in 2003, LinkedIn was just an online resume for people looking for jobs. The social networking service has since evolved into an important platform where professionals can network and learn from thought leaders. Like other social networking sites, LinkedIn has also been continuously innovating its interface to suit the needs of its growing user base.

On December 11, 2014, LinkedIn launched its redesigned homepage, which aims to “[make] it easier for [users] to quickly manage and benefit from [their] experience on LinkedIn.” Elizabeth Burstein, Senior Product Manager for Homepage at LinkedIn, explained that the new homepage design enhances the way users connect with others, helps users gain insights into how they’re being found on LinkedIn, and ensures that users acquire the knowledge they need.

Users will see a new dashboard at the top of the homepage, which displays the total number of profile views and update views. By clicking either of these views, deeper insights will be shown, such as connections who’ve viewed the user’s profile and how these connections discovered the user’s profile. LinkedIn also provides users with “how [they] rank across [their] connections, within [the] company, and other LinkedIn members.” Moreover, users can easily edit their profile in one click. Maintaining professional relationships is also easier now with the new Keep in Touch box on the right sidebar of the homepage [See Figure 2]. Users can quickly like or comment on a connection’s update as soon as it appears in the box. Burstein noted that LinkedIn will “bring [users] up to speed with the latest developments in [their] connections’ professional lives.” Users were also given an option to skip an update if desired; additionally, users will get suggestions of people to add to their network.

Since its integration in 2013, LinkedIn Pulse has been the source of professional news and insights in LinkedIn. In the new homepage design, LinkedIn Pulse is separated from the network, giving more emphasis to news that will get users “smarter and more informed for the day that lies ahead in just a few minutes.” In their feed, users can now see posts and articles shared by connections, produced by Influencers and people they follow.
